Rights of EU citizens living in the UK after Brexit: deadline to apply for settled status approaches

The UK’s decision to leave the EU has had far-reaching consequences both for EU citizens living in the UK and for UK citizens living in the EU.

Since the United Kingdom left the European Union, European citizens living in the UK have to apply for settled status to secure their EU rights there, but many have not yet done so.

The deadline for EU citizens living in the UK to apply for settled status will end on 30 June 2021.

UK citizens living in Ireland

The EU-UK Withdrawal Agreement guarantees United Kingdom nationals and their family members already living in Ireland before 31 December 2020 broadly the same rights as they had before the UK withdrew from the EU: they can continue to live, study and work here.

United Kingdom nationals and their family members, who lawfully resided in Ireland in accordance EU law on free movement on 31 December 2020, obtained their new residence status automatically, by operation of law. However they may still be required, as an administrative formality, to register with national authorities and apply for a new residence document that will help them certify their new residence status.

Information on the application process is available here.

To facilitate the access of UK nationals to information about national residence schemes and support measures in other EU Member States, the European Commission has put together a webpage containing the latest input from EU Member States.
