Ailbhe Gerrard's vision for sustainable agriculture is reflected across the farm’s operations, which include an organically certified sheep enterprise, native woodland planting, honey production, and tillage crops.
Brookfield Farm was purchased in 2010, around the same time Ailbhe began a Master’s in Organic Farming. Over the years, the land was gradually converted to organic production — a process now fully complete. Today, the farm runs on circular systems, using composting and solar energy to close resource loops and minimise environmental impact.
Her innovative approach was recognised in 2016 when she became a Nuffield Agricultural Scholar, researching how to add value to farm produce and build direct connections with consumers.
Organic farming and circular processes
Biodiversity is central to Brookfield Farm. Arable margins, bee, bird, and bat boxes, and wild bird cover strengthen the local ecosystem and support wildlife. Crop rotation and careful livestock grazing help maintain soil health, supplemented by natural enhancers such as seaweed. The farm produces mainly lamb and potatoes, focusing on local and seasonal supply.
Water and habitat management also play a key role. Two rainwater ponds have been installed, hedgerows are maintained for wildlife, and trees are integrated across the farm. As a conservation area for the native Irish honeybee, Brookfield Farm makes an important contribution to protecting this vital species.

Knowledge-sharing and community engagement
Beyond farming, Brookfield Farm has become a hub for knowledge-sharing. Ailbhe lectures at Gurteen Agricultural College and leads the Field Exchange initiative, which helps farmers across Ireland adopt more sustainable practices.
Field Exchange creates space for dialogue between agriculture and creativity, raising awareness of climate change while empowering rural communities to respond effectively. This community-focused approach underlines Ailbhe’s belief that farming can regenerate land, enrich biodiversity, and strengthen resilience while still producing high-quality food.
Recognition and EU support
Brookfield Farm’s achievements have been widely recognised. In 2019, it received the RDS Sustainable Farming, Sustainable Living Award. More recently, the Field Exchange Festival earned a special commendation in the 2024 RDS Sustainable Agriculture and Rural Development Awards for its positive impact on rural communities.
EU support has also played a crucial role, with organic farming schemes helping farms like Brookfield convert and expand. Ailbhe hopes to build on this backing to grow the business further.
Brookfield Farm demonstrates how agriculture, research, and community can come together in the transition to sustainable farming — offering a model for the future of Irish agriculture in line with EU priorities.
