Description
The debate is a simulation of a meeting of the Council of the European Union. Each EU Member State is represented by a team of students from a secondary school. For a list of participating schools, see here. It can be followed live on Youtube.
The theme of the 2022 debate is Migration, specifically a mock legislative proposal based on the ‘solidarity mechanism’ of the proposed Asylum and Migration Management Regulation (an element of the European Commission’s 2020 New Pact on Migration and Asylum). Participating schools have been encouraged to research and adopt the 'real life' position of the assigned Member State.
Following a welcome from the Head of the European Commission Representation in Ireland, Barbara Nolan, the event will be opened by Senator Lisa Chambers. Martina Fitzgerald, CEO of Scale Ireland and former RTÉ political correspondent will chair the debate.
The debate judges are Brian Killoran, CEO of the Immigrant Council of Ireland, Stephen O’Shea, Deputy Chief Executive of the European Movement Ireland, and Grace Bolton, Head of Press, European Commission Representation in Ireland.
Maria Walsh, MEP for the Midlands-North West constituency will make a closing speech.
The running order can be viewed here.
