Tuesday 29 March: A new Festival of European Languages - a culture trail

Join the European Union's cultural institutes and the European Commission on Tuesday afternoon, 29 March for a new Festival of European Languages.

Hybrid event where participating organisations invite members of the public to explore the possibilities of plurilingualism by dipping into the culture and language of a variety of countries.

In the form of a culture trail,participating organisations will invite members of the public to explore the possibilities of plurilingualism, by dipping into the culture and language of a variety of countries.

The new festival aims to promote language learning and an interest in plurilingualism through a series of linguistic and cultural activities – see the current list of events below.

The afternoon culture trail will follow a conference taking place on the same morning entitled ‘Inspiring Plurilingualism: Stakes and Perspectives in Europe’.  For further information about the conference and for registration information, please click here. 

Both events are being coordinated by the Embassy of France in Ireland to mark France’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union and are being organised in conjunction with the EUNIC-Ireland network and the European Commission.

Alliance Française Dublin– On-site and online activities from 3pm

  2. Mediatheque session
    • Visit of the spaces and presentation of the French Library (including Culturethèque)
    • Our videos and posters (future cultural events, institutional video "What is AF?", exams and certifications) will be played on the big screen
       
  3. Activities for young people in the Media Library
    • 3pm-3.30pm: Toddler Time 0-3 years
    • 15:30-16:00: Storytelling

Embassy of Greece

The Greek School of Ireland will present snapshots from its online language classes for children of all ages and for adults as well as classes on Greek mythology and traditions in order to give a taste of how fun and interesting it could be to learn Greek.

The Greek School, accredited and regulated by the Greek Ministry of Education and run by the Hellenic Community of Ireland since 2003, offers Greek Language classes for children and adults of all levels. The School is based at its new premises - 19 Belvedere Place, Dublin 1.

Embassy of Switzerland

The Embassy will run a virtual stand, which they will highlight on Instagram and Twitter.

Europe House: the Embassies of Poland and Portugal, the European Commission and Post-Primary Languages Ireland.

Two schools will visit Europe House to explore the value of multilingualism, to learn some key phrases in Polish and in Portuguese and to try their hand at a quiz about languages.

Goethe Institute

Students from the Goethe-Institut’s partner school - Coláiste Íosagáin / Eoin – will engage in activities on site.
 

Istituto Italiano di Cultura

TheIstituto Italiano di Cultura will host three captivating and contemporary on site attractions:

  1. The new multimedia artwork “F: DAE Micromapping” - a videoart composition of light and music (show starting every 30’)
  2. A presentation of the videogame “ITALY. Land of Wonders”. Tablets to experience the game will be provided.
  3. A free tour of the newly opened exhibition of Italian Illustrators “Dubliners” by Mario Sughi.

Between 2.30pm and 5pm, visitors will also have a chance to learn about our Italian language courses and browse the Italian Library’s catalogue.
