Tuesday 1 March: Becoming a translator or an interpreter in the EU institutions

Do you want to know more about what a translator or an interpreter does?  Are you interested in working in a multilingual and multicultural environment? Do you want to know how to become an EU translator or interpreter?

This joint European Commission/Irish Government event (online) will give you the opportunity to hear from a staff translator and an interpreter working for the European Commission about their career paths and what their jobs entail.  The event will be chaired by Eamonn Mac Aodha, Director of the Institutional Affairs section of Ireland’s Permanent Representation to the EU and is supported by the Government’s A Career for EU strategy.

A Career for EU is a strategy launched in May 2021 that aims to increase Irish representation in the EU’s institutions by promoting EU careers to Irish graduates and providing practical support for applicants. More information can be found at EUJobs - Department of Foreign Affairs (dfa.ie).

Caoimhe Alliot-Stenson

After studying Applied Languages (French and Spanish) at the University of Limerick for four years, during which time she lived abroad at every given opportunity (nine months of co-op in Paris, six months of Erasmus in Almeria and two summers in Barcelona and Valencia), Caoimhe enrolled in the Masters in Translation Studies at DCU. The day after submitting her final project she was on a plane to Luxembourg to start her first job as a junior financial translator. After two years she was Head of the English Team, responsible for training and mentoring newcomers, and after another two she was Team Leader for the Translation Department, covering seven languages. Caoimhe started working for the European Commission in 2015, where she has been translating from French, Spanish and, more recently, German and Romanian.

Kevin McCarthy

Kevin is an interpreter working for the English Interpretation Unit at DG Interpretation, the European Commission’s interpreting service. He interprets from French, Spanish, Dutch and Romanian into English. A graduate of the University of Limerick and the MA in Conference Interpreting at Babeș-Bolyai University (Cluj-Napoca, Romania), he is also involved in interpreter training and pedagogical assistance for interpreter training courses. Kevin started his career as a freelance interpreter and has been a staff member since 2011.
